General Contractor in Charlotte, NC — Design-Build General Contractor Since 2009

Logos

Most general contractor calls we get in Charlotte come from homeowners with a project too big for one trade to handle alone. A wall needs to come out, the family’s outgrown the house, or last year’s storm left damage that touches the roof, the framing, and the electrical all at once. That’s usually when people start looking for a general contractor instead of trying to manage three or four separate crews themselves. It’s a common story around Charlotte, Waxhaw, Weddington, Marvin, Matthews, Fort Mill, and Lake Wylie.

Dream Home Builders and Remodelers has worked as a general contractor in Charlotte since 2009. We’re a design-build company, meaning the same team that plans your project is the same team that builds it, pulls the permits, and manages every subcontractor along the way. One point of contact, one schedule, and nobody passing the blame when something needs to change.

General Contractor in Charlotte, NC

General contractor work covers projects that don’t fit neatly into one category, structural repairs, whole-home renovations, storm or water damage, and additions that touch multiple rooms at once. As a licensed general contractor, we pull the permits, schedule and manage the subcontractors, and keep the project on track so you’re not the one chasing down electricians, plumbers, and inspectors.

Whole-Home Renovations and Structural Work

Some projects mean touching almost every room in the house: new flooring throughout, structural changes like removing a load-bearing wall, or updating electrical and plumbing systems that are decades old. We manage that kind of project from demo to final walkthrough, coordinating the trades so work happens in the right order instead of crews tripping over each other.

Home Additions in Charlotte, NC

If your family has outgrown the house but moving isn’t the answer, a home addition is usually the better math. We build room additions, second-story additions, and in-law suites for homeowners across Charlotte and Fort Mill. Home additions typically run $100,000 to $200,000 or more, depending on the footprint, whether it’s single or multi-story, and how much of your existing home it connects into.

Permitting and Project Management

A general contractor’s job is as much about paperwork and scheduling as it is about the actual construction. We handle permit applications, coordinate inspections, and keep subcontractors on a schedule that actually holds up. That’s usually the part homeowners underestimate the most, since a permit delay or a scheduling conflict between trades can add weeks to a project that has nothing to do with the construction itself.
We also handle inspections along the way, not just the final one, so problems get caught while a wall is still open instead of after everything’s closed back up.

How Much Does a General Contractor Charge in Charlotte?

Pricing depends heavily on project scope. A home addition typically runs $100,000 to $200,000 or more, while a whole-home renovation varies based on square footage and how much structural or systems work is involved. We give you a real number after walking through your project, not a rough estimate over the phone.

How Long Does a General Contractor Project Take?

Timelines vary more with general contractor work than with a single-room remodel. A home addition typically runs 3 to 6 months from permit to final walkthrough, while a whole-home renovation without an addition can run anywhere from a few weeks to several months depending on how much of the house is involved. We map out a realistic schedule during planning so you know what to expect before demo starts.

Why Design-Build Matters for General Contractor Projects

Bigger projects usually mean more trades, more decisions, and more chances for something to fall through the cracks between a designer and a contractor who aren’t talking to each other. When one team designs and builds the project, changes get handled directly instead of turning into a dispute over who’s responsible. That matters most on exactly the kind of larger, multi-trade projects a general contractor typically handles.

General Contractor Services Across the Charlotte Area

We work as a general contractor across Charlotte, plus the surrounding towns: Waxhaw, Weddington, Marvin, Matthews, Fort Mill, and Lake Wylie. Older homes throughout this area often need structural updates alongside cosmetic work, so we plan for both from the start instead of running into surprises once a wall comes down.

Otto was incredible to work with. Otto converted our detached garage and added an outdoor / covered patio to create an awesome indoor / outdoor living space. Otto is knowledgeable, easy to work with, and helped us navigate the many decisions that come with a home renovation. Thanks, Otto!

When we tell our friends we LOVE our contractor, they roll their eyes and tell us their horror stories. We are so incredibly pleased and lucky to have found Otto and Dream Home Builders and Remodelers. Honestly. We were new to the area. We knew no one. No ability to get recommendations for the major home and garage project we had planned. So we Googled. Insane right? Somehow Otto’s Dream Builders site stood out. Once we met Otto we knew he was the right contractor for us. Straight forward, enthusiastic and professional. He’s just a real and nice guy. We didn’t get any other bids. Insane right? We just went with our gut. And was our gut right! Otto and Dream Builders transformed our home. 1) Care taken as we did architectural drawings. Loved his recommended architect! 2) Easy and thorough estimate process. 3) Set expectations well. 4) Started when he said he would start. 5) His subs showed up when he said they would and they were all top notch. Felt safe and confident when we had 10 trucks in my driveway and people in my home. 6) His oversite was always there. 7) He responded to every call and every email. 8) Handled all permits and inspections. 9) The work was exceptional and exactly what we wanted. 10) He made our dream come true. - He designed and built a garage with a gorgeous family room above it. - Painted and roofed the entire exterior of home and new garage. - Renovated our dilapidated shed. - Concrete and rock work. If you are thinking about building or renovating, you should call Otto at Dream Home Builders and Remodelers.

We used Dream Home Builders (Otto) to build a 2 stall detatched garage with a mother-in-law suite (full studio apartment) above it. We live in the Myers Park area of Charlotte. Their team was great in helping make our ideas a reality on the project. We had a "rough vision" but Otto helped us at every step along the way with helpful suggestions and recommendations. He was never pushy, but let us know what the market trends and reasoning behind these suggestions were. We are preparing to remodel a bathroom in our house soon and have already tapped Dream Home Builders to do that project as well. The sign of a great builder is the willingness to use them again! Thanks Dream Home Builders / Otto, The McCorduck (Perkio) is greatly appreciative of the work you've done, we love the finished product.

Otto Anderson from Dream Home Builders recently renovated our primary bathroom in Charlotte, NC. From start to finish, he demonstrated professionalism, organization, and transparency, which made the process smooth and stress-free. One of the standout qualities was his organization. He kept the project on schedule and provided regular updates on the progress, ensuring that there were no surprises. His communication was clear and consistent, and he was always available to address any questions we had. We also appreciated his honesty and transparency about what was feasible within our space and budget. Rather than overpromising, he was upfront about what could and couldn’t be done and offered creative solutions to achieve the look we wanted without compromising quality. Regarding costs, he was clear from the start and provided a detailed breakdown of expenses. There were no hidden fees or unexpected charges, which gave us peace of mind throughout the project. The final result speaks for itself—our bathroom is stunning, functional, and exactly what we envisioned. We highly recommend Otto to anyone looking for a reliable, skilled, and trustworthy professional for home renovations. We will definitely hire him in the future!

We recently decided to renovate our kitchen in Matthews North Carolina. We cook every day and it is the central gathering place in our home. After doing research and interviews, we chose Dream Home Builders for the project. Otto came to our home to assess the project. Rather than tell us what we should do, he carefully listened to understand what we wanted. We were impressed that he brought all of the craftsman that would be involved in the project to our home on a single day to discuss and coordinate who would do what when. Once the project began, it flowed smoothly with no hiccups. With Otto‘s help, we chose an interior designer to help us select specific materials for the project. She worked well with Otto to see that our vision became reality. Our expectations were met and exceeded with regard to communication, quality workmanship, budget, smooth scheduling and finished product. Dream home builders has earned our whole-hearted recommendation.

Otto and his team with Dream Home Builders & Remodelers are one of the rare finds. I’m the daughter of a builder (not located in the same city) and am very picky about finding a true craftsman with quality work and attention to detail. Otto met the requirement! They did about 5 projects total for us, see below for more: -Converted our hot back patio into a beautiful covered and screened porch with a stone gas log fireplace, ceiling fans, and recessed lighting. We now enjoy our outside space versus baking in the summer sun! This including crown molding details both inside and outside that matched our current aesthetic -Created a ‘moms attic’ in our garage for storage and re-insulated our garage ceiling for better temperature control in our finished room above the garage -Converted our downstairs half bath into a guest bath with custom tile shower -Created and installed a 14’ custom shaker desk unit for 2 (hybrid work) and a shaker desk and window bench for our daughters room -Replaced our old single front door and transoms with a beautiful custom oversized double mahogany front door with Flemish glass. They also turned some circa 2000 round structural columns into square columns with trim work that matched the style of our home And lastly, they were CLEAN! This is a HUGE benefit if you are in the market for a builder. Every day his crews tidied up after themselves and never left a mess. We will definitely use Otto for more projects in the future!

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of projects need a general contractor instead of a single trade?
Anything that touches multiple trades at once, structural changes, whole-home renovations, additions, or storm damage repair, usually needs a general contractor to coordinate the work and pull the right permits.
Do I need a permit for a home addition in Charlotte?
Yes, home additions almost always require permits, and often multiple inspections along the way. We handle that process as part of the project.
Can you manage a project that's already underway with another contractor?
It depends on the situation. Reach out and we can talk through where the project stands and whether it makes sense for us to take it over.
